WHAT ARE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY LEVELS?

The Civil Aviation (Personnel Licensing) Regulations outline 6 levels of language proficiency. For the purpose of administration of the language proficiency program. The following levels will be assigned:

1) "Expert" - Level 6
2) "Extended" - Level 5
3) "Operational" - Levels 4); or
4) "Below Operational" - Levels 1-3

The following qualification and recurrent testing requirements apply to the results of language proficiency testing:

1) Those assessed at the "Below Operational" level do not qualify for a license.
2) Those assessed at the "Operational" level must be re-tested every 3 years;
3) Those assessed at the "Extended" level must be retested every 6 years.
4) Those assessed at the "Expert" level require no further testing;

CAN I FLY WITH MY KENYAN RPL IN ANOTHER COUNTRY?

No, you would still need to fulfill all the legal requirements of that country.

There are certain proficiencies that you could validate.

HOW MANY EXAMS ARE IN THE RPL COURSE AND HOW MUCH DO I NEED TO PASS THE EXAM?

There are 7 examinations if you attend a single rating. With an additional rating, you would need to write an additional subject.

A Single Rating means that you select to either do the Multi-Rotor or the Fixed Wing.

A Dual Rating means that you select both Multi-Rotor and Fixed Wing.

The pass mark is 75% for each examination written

IS IT DIFFICULT TO PASS THE RADIOTELEPHONY EXAM?

If you don’t study for the Radiotelephony exam, then the examination will probably be difficult to pass. If you use all the tools given to you in class, then you can pass the exam.

WHAT IS A FLIGHT RADIOTELEPHONY OPERATOR’S LICENCE AND WHY DO I NEED ONE?

A flight radiotelephony operator's licence allows you to broadcast on frequency i.e talk to other people in the same airspace.

We have both manned and unmanned pilots operating in the same areas and need to know who to speak to each other with the correct phraseology and how to structure your radio calls.

The test is split into two parts:
1.Oral examination where the examiner examines your ability to structure your radio calls.
2.The online examination consisting of multiple-choice questions and is written at the KCAA Test Centre.

WHERE CAN I GET MY CLASS 3 MEDICAL CERTIFICTE?

KCAA has designated several doctors as approved aviation medical doctors who are qualified to examine and certify one with a class 3 medical certificate.

MAY I BRING MY OWN DRONE TO TRAIN WITH?

No, unfortunately not. You need to fly an aircraft registered to the UTO you are training under in order to obtain your license.

All Dronector Training Academy aircraft are registered with the KCAA.

HOW LONG DOES THE RPL COURSE TAKE?

The RPL course may be completed in under a month with the theory component taking 6 days and the practical component taking 2 to 3 weeks depending on students’ skill, experience, progress, availability, and weather conditions.

HOW MAY I INSURE MY DRONE WHILE IT IS IN FLIGHT?

Drone insurance requires the pilot to hold an RPL, the drone to be registered with CAA and the flight to be conducted under a ROC.

CAN I OPERATE COMMERCIALLY WITH AN RPL?

You cannot operate commercially with your drone with just an RPL, you would need to gain a Remote Air Operators Certificate or work under a company that is certified with one and have KCAA Registered aircraft.
